Georgia arrested 63 protesters after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at thousands of pro-EU protesters opposing a controversial "foreign influence" bill!
Georgia has been facing anti-government protests since April 9, following the Georgian Dream party's plans to enact legislation that Brussels has criticized for harming Tbilisi's EU ambitions. Critics argue the "foreign influence" measure is similar to Russian legislation used to suppress criticism. Several journalists were targeted.
Levan Khabeishvili, chairman of the opposition United National Movement, was severely battered and required medical attention.
Supporter Sophia Japaridze claimed she was beaten by police. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called for an immediate stop to the crackdown on protests.
Tbilisi protesters blocked Rustaveli Avenue and other major streets, blocking traffic and setting up barricades.
However, the rally ended early, but was expected to resume later. 63 demonstrators were arrested for disobeying police and petty hooliganism, using legitimate force only after violence.
